Big foamy pour from the big take-home jug from last night. Handsome creamy head sticks to everything and lasts better than most tap-room draughts. Dark brown shading to chestnut in the flared cider glass. Tangy with a really sparkly mouthfeel. Not much aroma.
More robust and drier than most Doppelbocks I've tried. This is plenty malty, but more roasted and less sweet. The coffee flavor is a surprise. A bitter finish, but the sweet malt keeps pace with the hops. Some charred barley and burnt sugar. A hint of cloves and Milk Duds. That's what I couldn't quite place-- it's sort of a drier Milk Stout with the java edge.
I think this is one of the better Doppelbocks in my experience. This is not a beer you would expect among the hipster San Diego brewing boutiques, but it's a nice exploration of the German style.
