Rich golden yellow that fades to a pale hazy lemon at the thin points. I have typically assumed kolschs are supposed to be pretty clear, but I've had a couple recently that are pretty murky, and this one is no exception. If clearness is not actually supposed to be a part of the style, I suppose I'd kick the look rating up by about .25. Decent little white head that settles in but is replenished by constant lively carbonation.

Nose has some straw malts but also some almost tart. I guess that would be what is described as vinous in the BA description.

That's an odd combination of flavours coming together there. Initially more in the vinous/almost kind of lemon-y character... maybe a bit mineralic. Finishes with some oily lime, but also kind of drops out pretty precipitously.

Cold, it tastes fairly thin. As it warms, it fills out a little, but only a little. Oily with a lingering bitter finish, this brings to mind NZ-style hops, or at least what I associate with them, which could be way off because I'm not super well versed in their characteristics as it's not my preferred expression of the cone.

Honestly it's not as bad as the ratings suggest, but I don't really feel like making any adjustments.

Nearly clear yellow with plenty of foam in the Maredsous goblet. Aroma is distinctive and uninviting. It's grain mixed with very old, fermented apple juice. Sweet corn and musty flavor. Cidery aftertaste followed by light mineral bitterness. I have to say this is totally unlike a Kölsch.

This is actually very peculiar. Is it possible this is infected? It has been so long since I've encountered that once-routine problem. From the 16 oz can purchased at Elizabeth Station. Date appears to be 12-20 so it's not exactly young.

Served On-Tap

A – Pours a pale clear yellow with a thin and bright white head, minimal lacing left behind.

S – Smells of sweet malt and grain, pretty one dimensional.

T – Sweet, light, crisp and clean malt notes, light pepperiness to it.

M – Light to medium bodied, crisp, easy drinking.

O – A Kölsch for sure, just wish it wasn't quite so sweet.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a very hazy yellow with about 1/4 inch of white head that had low retention and decent lacing.

The aroma was fairly neutral, light base grains and a slight hop tanginess. The hops at the back of the tongue gave the only real flavor highlight, otherwise the beer was fairly unnotable.

The body was nicely smooth, even, and a bit fuller than typical. Drinkability was good, it went down quickly enough, and I'll probably order it again. Overall, a decent enough beer, although it doesn't meet the standards set by Chuckanut for local versions of the style. Worth trying if you see it.
