Very Good
Notes: Deep Winter both describes, and is the prescription for, that “special” time of the year every seasoned Midwesterner is more than familiar with. To help the libation bearer break through to Spring thaw, we decided to do a complete substitute of coffee for hops. With a lighter roast used for a soft bittering effect, and a richer Guatemalan bean used for the flavor and aroma, we wish you luck in determining exactly where the ambrosial waves of coffee end and the luscious beer begins.

On tap at The Side Door in Madison. A perfectly average stout with a strong taste of coffee. If you like unsweetened coffee, this is your brew. Very strong coffee start, middle, and finish. Light carbonation. Thin.

Been waiting all winter for this beer to come out. One of my favorite K4 beers. Huge coffee aroma and taste. Not as much chocolate as I remember. Still very good.

16oz pour on draft at Karben4's taproom in Madison, WI. Poured into a K4 goblet today, 1/27/2014.

App- dark black, thin but solid mocha head, some retention, a bit of lacing. Not overly carbonated it would appear. Nice and dark.

Smell- just coffee. Good freshly roasted black coffee that stands on it's own. Not much from the base stout.. It seems to blend in with the coffee.

Taste- fresh cold pressed black coffee is perfectly balanced with the roast malts. When I say perfectly, both of these characteristics stand out strongly here. They do dominate the dark chocolates and slight soy umami. Nicely done.

Mouthfeel- medium bodied, creamy and just the right amount of carbonation for the style. A bit sticky with a nice balanced aftertaste- both bitter coffee and milk chocolate sweetness.

Overall- nicely done, very easy to drink and balanced well. Good design considering no hops were used in making this beer, which is quite interesting if nothing else. Worth making it out here to try on draft at least once.
