12 oz can in Yellowstone NP.
Dark reddish brown body with a tall foamy beige head. Good retention.
Sweet malts with earthy hops in the nose.
Minimal hops and more malt forward flavor, although they earthy hops reappear in the aftertaste. Moderately sweet.
Smooth medium body with soft carbonation.

Can from Trader Joes. Half porter, half brown. Nice looking pour, dark clear brown with soft creamy beige head. Curtains of lacing remain. Aroma is semi-sweet chocolate first, hinting at some roast grains in the background. Smooth, slick, silky body, more chocolate in the taste, some roast grain / coffee sharp bitterness. Almost dry finish, mostly lingering bitterness.

On-tap @ the brewery in Meridian ID. Served in a tall, thin fluted glass.
A: Darker brown with red highlights, pretty transparent, with a light amount of off-white head and lacing.
S: Nutty, caramelly sweet toasted malt bill, slight poke of a natural, grassy hop presence. Also a faint toffee character and the slightest bit of chocolate.
T: A lot like the nose, toasted caramel and grains, nutty sweetness and a bit of earthy carob, light dusting of cocoa and the faintest bit of hop bitterness to balance.
MF: Medium-ish body, feels light though, in a good way.
O: Hugely drinkable dark beer, really nicely balanced; a good amount of sweetness and toasted grain with a near-perfect hop undertone for the style. Nicely done.

Stopped in at the brewery over the weekend and filled a chub... finally getting to it tonight while finishing up some work for tomorrow.
I had a hard time picking a category for this one.. At the brewery, the brewer called it a "light porter" with a nod to his wife; my glass at the brewery called it an average American brown. But with time with the growler, I went with English Porter because I think that is what the peeps at Slanted Rock would want.
Poured into my Hair of the Dog goblet... nice long lasting tan head.. great retention and spotty lacing.. The brew is not as dark as most porters, but a slightly hazed walnut.
Nose shows light cocoa and nutty maltiness with lesser light caramel... some very light fruity esters make me think raisin.. Hops are present and light... a little grassy hoppiness.
Flavor mirrors the aromas with a lingering nutty malt essence and the ever light grassy hops.. an appropriate hop bitterness on the finish combines with the cocoa and background esters and makes for a pretty damn drinkable brew.
Body is light/medium with the expected carbonation.
Nicely done.. surprisingly well done.
