32oz growler fill from Green's PG, poured into a Conquest snifter.
A: Pours a deep copper, approaching a reddish-brown; this reveals a bright, clear copper body when held to the light. The initial 1/2 inch, off-white hide recedes momentarily, but returns upon swirling, leaving long legs along the curves of the glass. This is even prettier than the base beer.
S: Toffee, more toffee, caramel, vanilla, just a little bourbon, slight fusel, and a sweet candi scent. The barrel has added a complexity and sweetness. Inviting.
T: Far more going on here than in the base beer--the barrel has treated this (and me!) well. Toffee, caramel, and vanilla are prominent, along with a mild, earthy hop bitterness. Not at all a bourbon bomb, yet a clear display of barrel characteristics, with the added bonus of a candi sweetness like a tangerine jolly rancher (do they even make those?).
M: Full, just a bit sticky, but not as syrupy as other examples of the style. Smooth (ha !), fairly short finish, with a bit of lingering sweetness.
O: A marvelous improvement over the (solid) base beer, and more than a little reminiscent of Weyerbacher's Insanity. That's high marks for the first barrel-aged effort from a little brewery in Columbia, SC.
