From the descriptions, this beer seems to be very similar to Gottberg's previous pale ale, except darker. Now, on to the review itself:
Impromptu Pale Ale pours a light amber color into my pint glass. A 1" head forms, and slowly dissipates. Moderate carbonation and lacing. The aroma is more complex than a typical American Pale Ale; the hops smell of citrus and flowers along with the expected pine aroma. The malts are also present, giving off a biscuity/toasty aroma.
The flavor of this beer is very much in line with how it smells, and is also a step or two above the typical APA in complexity. The initial taste is a mix of citrus with a slightly floral and spicy hop bitterness; after a bit the biscuit and caramel flavors of the malts come through. All the taste elements are very well balanced here, with the hops being a bit more restrained in the taste than they are in the aroma. The mouthfeel is full without being heavy; there is no trace of diacetyl. Finishes crisp and clean, leaving a pleasant citrus/spice hop aftertaste.
In a sea of pale ales, Impromptu is better than most. While most pale ales are one-dimensional in smell and taste, this beer manages to bring all of its components together in a highly enjoyable and drinkable manner. If I lived closer to Columbus, this would likely be my everyday pale ale. Recommended.
