A 'sour cherry smoked cacao dopplebock' brewed for GABS festival in Melbourne, May 2014. Not sure if Wayward are going into market with Doppelbock misspelled, but I hope nobody minds if I correct the spelling for its name on BA. Tried at the festival on tap.
Pours a red colour, more pale than I thought but nice enough. Beige head that retains nicely.
Smells pleasant. Lots of spicy chocolate with rich cocoa, touches of cinnamon and maybe some five spice as well. Pleasant indeed.
Taste is sweeter at times, but along similar lines. Again that cocoa-rich chocolate character with a sweet vanilla twist upfront, gets slightly roasty midway with a touch of espresso, then sweet dessert spice comes through late, more cinnamon and a touch of clove. Not very dark, but lots of nice darkish characters anyway.
Decent mouthfeel, maybe a touch too much alcohol heat.
Nice beer; as a doppelbock it feels a bit light, but as a beer it's complex, interesting and good drinking.
