The Beer
Fall is here, friends! Grab your sweaters. As the temperature drops, we here at the brewery are reaching for heartier, darker beers and think you should too. Flap Jack is brewed in the spirit of true New Englanders: a robust Double Brown Ale with locally sourced maple syrup sturdy enough to stand up to the chilly nights and shortening days. Enjoy this beer with roast lamb leg, pot pie, and leaf peeping!
The Story
As the leaves start turning, here at the brewery we start to hear a ghostly voice on the wind, whispering “When are you guys going to make a pumpkin beeeer…” With pride in our chest and fire in our eyes we answer “Never. Pumpkin beers are gross.” Flap Jack is the un-pumpkin beer: sturdy, rustic, with all the complexity our beloved English malts can provide, and a touch of pure New England maple syrup. Pumpkins are for porches, malts are for making beer.

A: Pours a nice brown color with a white head. Head doesn't last long out of a can.
S: This beer gives off a wonderful aroma. Maple, malt roast fill the scent of this beer.
T: Wonderful taste. I love the malt flavor as well as the hint of maple. This beer is northern new england in a nutshell

Flap Jack has a very thick, spongy, tan head, an opaque, brown appearance, and some splotchy lacing. The aroma is of faint maple syrup and dark malt. The flavor is of bold maple syrup sweetness, strong bitterness, and brown bread crust. Flap Jack has a high-medium body and a mostly-dry finish.

From the can, it pours a dark brown with reddish highlights and a nice light brown head - leaes lacing as you enjoy the product. In the nose, it is dark malts with a hint of maple. In the mouth, it is malty with a touch of bitter and maple. One of the better brown ales I have had.

Pleasant surprise! Stopped by the brewery on a craigslist run (for a pedestal sink... get your mind out of the gutter) from VT to NH. Picked up 4 pack of this stuff... very good. Dark and smooth bitterness up front with a slightly sweet maple-ly syrup aftertaste on the back. Nice foamy head retention... great sipping beer for fall football while leave peeping. Silly.

Oh, man, their eastern neighbors get all the beer love, but I totally dig what is coming to me in CANs from the Granite State. Yeah, yinz CAN go chase all of the Lawson's & Hill Farmstead that you want, but I'm digging some NH goodness! Sunday was my New CANned Henniker Beer Sunday (Week 733) & I left things unfinished at the end of the day. Time to include, vice exclude!

I may be coming a little late to the party, but it is still quite cool in these waning weeks before Spring 2019 officially begins. I Crack!ed open the vent on this latest pounder CAN & beCAN a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. I was pleasantly surprised when if performed a pseudo-cascade & formed just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with good retention. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with NE-quality clarity & garnet highlights. Beautiful! Nose was definitely malty, but more smoky than sweet as their use of maple syrup would have seemed to suggest. Mouthfeel was medium, but on the thin side for a "Double Brown Ale". The taste was not very sweet at all. I got a slightly smoky, lightly treacle-like flavor, definitely rustic and quite drinkable. Finish was semi-dry with a slightly jangly quality that was not sweet, but more towards treacle. They mention pairing this with "roast lamb leg or [beef] pot pie" & I CAN certainly envision this. Yum!

Appearance: A very dark, solid brown with a thick eggshell head. Great looking beer. Lots of lace.
Aroma: Dark malts, pancakes, grain, oats.
Taste: Maple syrup is right there. Full bodied, malty ale behind it. Roasty. Bit of chocolate.
Mouthfeel: A nice slow sipper. Little bit of booze punch on the finish.
Overall: A well executed weird idea. Aren’t those the best? Terrific fall seasonal.
