La Chope de Lug

 

They sell only beers made in the Lyon area. You won't find anything from Belgium or even other parts of France. The guy working in there(he was not the owner) was helpful and seemed to know the local beer scene well. The shop is small but is nice and on a charming side street. If you want beer local to this area this is a great place.

Situated in the old city area of Vieux Lyon it La Chope. It's a small store, with much of the bottles for sale on an unrefrigerated shelf, with only a few items in a small fridge near the entrance.

There is some decent diversity, but you wont find any obscure Belgians here. The store is primarily focused on beer from the region in France, and with that it does deliver. I did have a small chunk of them on my trip, and the store by far has the most diverse amount from French producers that I saw anywhere in the country. Still the quality of them is nothing on par with a few exceptions with some of the American and Belgian producers (particularly the IPAs).

The shop owner speaks decent enough English as well, just make sure to speak slowly and take your time. He was able to answer any questions I had and also was happy when I asked for a recommendation or two.

If you're in to trying something new, it's worth a shot. Plus it will be one of the few places you will find an IPA in France amongst all the excess Heineken and Biere Blanche that dominates the country. Worthy stop.

Small shop in Old Lyon, but a great find. Shop specializes in beers from the Loire Valley and the shop owner is a very cool guy who knows his stuff and is very willing to help. His English is just meh, but it doesn't really matter because he's eager to please and he's got the best selection of French beers. Language fluency (or lack of such) does not inhibit the experience.

Like most of France it's located on a little street (with a hard to read street sign) that looks a lot like the last ten streets that you were on, but it's worth finding this one.

I told him that I had looked his shop up on Beer Advocate and that he had gotten good reviews and he had no idea what a Beer Advocate was, but seemed happy. After having a few of the beers, I, too, was happy.

A nice find in Vieux Lyon. The guy behind the counter (who I assume is the owner) was happy to help me browse the impressive selection of mostly unfamiliar beers. (My French is terrible; his English is not bad at all.) The focus on beers from the region is a welcome strategy, and a change of pace from the standard selection of Belgian beers one usually finds in France. There's a lot of interesting brewing going on in France but the beers can be hard to find. I could only carry away one bottle, so I asked for a recommendation and left with a nice IPA from Pleine Lune/Le Paradis. I'll be back (with more carrying capacity) next time I find myself in Lyon. Prices are what you would expect for specialty beer sold by a store in a high-rent district. You're not coming here for a bargain.

This is an obligatory stop if you're a beer geek, especially if you're going on a Beercation. Le Chop de Lug is a small beer store located in the beautiful historical center of Lyon. What makes this store stand out from the rest though, is the fact that it only carries beer made in the Rhone region of France. Not only that, it carries a relatively large selection (I would wager between 150-200 beers).

The store itself doesn't have any kind of outstanding medieval decoration and the service is very non-interventionist and unpersonalized but that ends up being rendered irrelevant considering the access you get to obscure regional brands you wouldn't have heard from otherwise (I certainly didn't and i did my research before embarking to Lyon!) at a very nice price.

I'm very glad i found this beer spot as it opened my eyes to the Rhone craft brewing scene. Who would have thought Sorachi Ale Bitters and Braggots were being brewed in this part of the world?
