my first beer from j wells is a nice one, a bit safe perhaps, but when it tastes this good, thats fine with me. a nice hoppy amber ale with a good head and fine clarity. a nose of lemony citra hops, maybe this was even dry hopped with citra, or something similar. almost smells more like ipa than amber ale, with the nutty sweet amber malt being way behind the fresh and fragrant hops. the flavor is maybe a little more balance, but the malt doesnt stay sweet like ambers usually do, it melts right into a beautiful hoppy finish, floral and bright and citrusy and like the best of lemon and tangerine, and it plays on the red malt really nicely. yeast dries it out pretty well for the style, and the beer has a satisfying finish thats neither long nor brief, but comfortably in between and very appropriate for the style as well. carbonation is just short of where i would like it to be, but it extends the whole experience for me a little bit, which i dont mind in the least. i have to get myself over to the brewery, i have heard some good things and this makes me keen to try more.
