22oz bottle purchased at Albertson’s in Kennewick, WA, for $6.99. I have yet to see bottles of this in the town where I live that’s maybe 30 miles from the brewery, but it’s available in a grocery store 150 miles away. Go figure. No freshness date. The label states it’s 9% alcohol, with 99 IBUs, and is described as “malty with hops to match, Simcoe focused.”
Poured into an old Boundary Bay pint glass that, according to beertunes is now a collector’s item (I should probably retire it), this was a chill-hazed golden shade of amber, with a big, sticky, creamy off-white head that left tons of lace on the above-mentioned glass.
Big, grapefruity-citrus type hop aroma. Not a whole lot else, including malts, can be detected.
The taste is considerably more balanced, with a nice malt backbone providing support to the hops, which are more restrained than in the nose, but are still the stars of the show. Nice, approachable, moderately bitter citrusy hop flavor here. It still reminds me of grapefruit more than anything else, but it’s somewhat mellow. Moderately dry at the swallow.
Fairly big body for the style, at the upper end of medium, with a coating, creamy, moderately oily mouthfeel.
While the 9% alcohol is fairly well hidden, this seems a bigger DIPA to be sure, but still rather drinkable. I quite like this, and will drink it again in the future – should I actually find it locally, where it should be easiest to find!
