What better way to figure out which hop combinations work best than to launch a series of beers that celebrates such play in hop flavors. Naukabout Brewing turns to the tried and true combination of Citra and Mosaic hops in their 58th stab at experimentation.
Pale gold and firmly hazy, Tides Voyage: 58 sets sail on the senses with a bright tropical, citrus and herbal perfume that aligns on the nose like citronella and gin-like botanicals. As its firm and malty foundation provides a creamy grain taste and texture, notions of cereal, shortbread and honeysuckle come to mind.
As the hops unfold on the middle palate, its the citrusy flavors of orange, pink grapefruit and lime that stand out first. As a more tropical flavor looms, the beer soon turns toward passionfruit, mango and a hint of pineapple for extra measure. With the malt flavor finally fading toward finish, the late hop profile turns spicy and lightly bitter with hints of chive, bright herb, green tea, verbena, sassafras and hemp in a smooth balance to the supportive malt sweetness.
Medium full and trending malty dry, the beer finishes fruity and spicy with impressions of mulled fruit peels and grassiness extending into a medium-long aftertaste of those gin-like botanicals and citronella attributes rising once more.
