super long red wine barrel aged imperial stout here, hands down the best beer we drank at their curious bristol location. this is obsidian black from the tap, with a short dense greyish brown head, and some serious viscosity. it smells incredibly intense, oddly acidic, and as much wine driven as dark grain, huge roast, stewed berries, coffee, smoke, light funk, and wood, with attendant vanilla richness, really dynamic and unique, even challenging to my senses, plenty of alcohol as well. the flavor is very concentrated and deep, its instantly palate coating and almost shocking, exposed alcohol abounds, but it serves to sort of enhance the vinous aspect of this, which is sweet and berry forward, blackberry and huckleberry to me, with some intense tannins and even some bacterial pucker. the dark barley is also intense, minerals and char to it, some needed bitterness as well, and a warming coffee layer. tobacco and licorice and black pepper too. more sharpness than i need in the mouthfeel, although it does cut through some of the colossal body. this stays with me long after the drink is gone. it seems almost impossible to get this much wine character in a big stout like this without actually using grapes or blending in finished wine, that this all came from barrels is hard to believe, it must have been in freshly emptied ones forever. real interesting beer overall, nice base stout obviously, heavy barrel influence, and some strange but in this case agreeable fermentation characteristics. a beer for sharing, but a good one.

On tap. Poured an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. It smelled of red wine grapes, oak, chocolate and toffee. Sweet chocolate, toffee and pinot noir flavors. Mild bitterness.
