A 500ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2014, so it's a little out of date. Purchased a while back from the York Beer & Wine shop. Described as a dark lightly-roasted ale; hopped with US varieties. Slightly style defying.
A: Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned and highly carbonated. A dark reddish-amber hue with intense carbonation and plenty of floating sediment. Produces a vast head of creamy off-white foam with excellent retention; this slowly subsides to a thick surface layer. Good lacing.
S: Aroma of caramel malt with hints of subtle roasted grain, mild lactic sourness, fruity ale yeast, vague biscuits and stewed leaves. Underwhelming.
T: Tastes of mild roasty malt with a lingering dry finish. Notes of mild roasted grain, a hint of caramel, subtle sourness, fruity yeast esters, earthiness and stewed leaves. Slightly sweet, followed by a dry, leafy bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with spritzy carbonation and decent body. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of earthy yeast, mild caramel malt and stewed leaves.
O: So-so; I reckon the yeast character has overdeveloped. Looks OK, with an insanely huge head. The aroma and flavour are a fairly dull mix of yeast esters, light roasted malt, stewed leaves and vague sourness. Body is alright. Not brilliant, but probably a bit too old. Might re-review a fresher bottle at some point. No need to hunt it down.
