33 cl bottle, 5.0% ABV, 50 IBUs according to label.
A – Deep straw color with some orange highlights. Just a tiny bit hazy. Bottle-conditioning leaves a bit of sediment. Great piles of fluffy head are almost pure white and made up of large bubbles. Remains as a thick curtain on the beer and lots of lacing.
S – After the initial pour there was a nice fresh grassy hop aroma with some horse blanket funk in the background. As it warmed and breathed, the horse blanket came to dominate and the hops faded. No malt was apparent in aroma. It smells like a hoppy saison or gueuze. Interesting, but I’m not sure it was what the brewer was going for.
T – Taste is of gueuze-like funk, pineapple, and grassy hops. Moderate hops bitterness. There is a bit of sweetness in the middle and the finish is more sweet than I’d expect given the Brett. characteristics. No real malt flavors.
M – Thin body. Smooth carbonation. No alcohol burn.
O – This is a very interesting, tasty, funky beer that tastes like some super-hoppy saisons or gueuzes I’ve had. But the website says this is an IPA in the English tradition. I have to wonder if the dominant Brettanomyces character was intentional or if it was a happy accident in the batch that my bottle came from. A saison maker would be very proud of this beer, but would an IPA maker?
