i am learning that i can trust that breakside beer will be awesome no matter what style it is. they seem to rock at just about everything, and here they make a beautiful smoked robust porter that really is fantastic. rich near black color to it, average viscosity, nothing gnarly, but a nice almost full inch of lighter tan head, a stark and frothy contrast. the aroma is awesome! woody smoke, just starting to get the campfire lit, but not with wet heavy pine needles or leaves, instead its a fire being built with dry gathered tinder and lighting clean. its not heavy or acrid at all, its not overpowering the chocolate notes in the center of this, and its not as heavy as some of the european smoked malts and beers that they are used in. there is a nice combination of roast from the grain and smoke in the taste, but all in balance. a touch of that more intense rauch iodine thing, but i dont mind it here, especially as the beer warms up, it makes it interesting. the base porter has a lot of body and character to it, dark chocolate, even unbrewed coffee beans here and just a tiny bit of molasses type sweetness in here. fluffy and full bodied, hearty enough for cold weather but i have no problem drinking this up. the recipe here is great, and the quality is awesome. one of the better smoked porters i have had lately. really high on these guys right now!
