Back to the Future IPA- a collaboration with our friends at Fremont Brewing Co. for Portland Beer Week.

This IPA is a cross-border collaboration with Seattle’s Fremont Brewing. We planned the beer together and each brewed a batch of it for our cities’ respective Beer Weeks. When we set out to do this beer together, we knew that we wanted to make a big IPA and showcase some fun hop varietals that don’t get much attention..yet.

We specifically chose new varietals that we think have a lot of promise, and it’s named after the futuristic hops used in each version: Jarrylo and Equinox in Fremont’s, and Azacca and Ella in ours. These beers very might well introduce you to new hop varietals that will be front and center in many IPAs to come.

Had this on tap at McLaddens in Northampton. The beer had a lightly copper hint to its orange appearance with a good, medium sized head and thick lacing. Not too overpowering with the nose; some citrus and grapefruit combination with some piney hops. The taste followed the nose with a pretty refreshing IPA flavor; nothing overpowering to the palate, just some good citrus flavors. The mouthfeel helped with the flavoring to make the beer really refreshing and generally enjoyable. Overall, not super heavy on flavors, but really thirst quenching and refreshing.

Different than the recipe they brewed with Fremont last year. More towards the hazy/NE style; pretty solid.

I actually really like the flavour in this, the hops work really well together, and set it apart from many typical IPAs. Bitterness is nice and assertive as well. Poured very little head and didn't leave any retention. The aroma is good, but a bit light for a big IPA.

Golden amber brew with modest swirls of foam in the Ciney snifter. Light and bright on the tongue. Pleasant sudsy mouthfeel. Aromas of honeysuckle and pine.

Some warm malt with a little sweetness. Piney and sharp with melon and mango notes. Fairly bitter aftertaste, but quite spicy. A tangy mouthful of flavor that uses the fruity hops to good advantage. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Chuck's 85th St. Market in Seattle.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass. I like Fremont and Breakside, so hopes are high!

Appearance: light golden hue with a shimmery haze and a moderate effervescence. Head is a finger of frothy ivory foam; I like it.

Smell: lightly toasty malt aroma with a bit of a floral hop character; it's got that soapy effect that some floral IPAs/pale ales do. It's actually not too bad.

Taste: malt is quite toasty and there's more of that floral/soapy hop thing going on. Bitterness is moderate but a little raspy. Not bad, but I feel like it could be smoother.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a massive carbonation and creaminess. Amazing for an IPA.

Overall: a good enough beer, but the raspy bitterness and overall soapiness cut into its dinkability.
