a very different take on a fall seasonal here, and i am a huge fan. the long chain of excellent beers from these guys just keeps on going. this is a big malty red lager, brewed with sweet potatoes, hence the clever name, and its full of autumnal character without being an obvious pumpkin spice or octoberfest thing, which i greatly appreciate. a nice rich red to brown color on this, good clarity and head too, looks hearty and smells fantastic, with a little starchy sweetness from the potato, surprised i can pick up on that right away, also some interesting spiciness too, organic and earthy tasting, maybe some rye malt in the mash, i do not at all mean fall spices, but it almost fills in there, beady and robust, and its all there in the flavor too, full from the potato, grounded and earthy, even soil-esque, with some peppery and baked elements and a touch of sweetness. round bigger medium body, but its quick finishing, the fact that its a lager is obvious in the feel, which is surprising in a bigger, maltier beer like this that isnt like a classic dunkel lager or something. this has elements of autumn maple from the bruery, which is to say that its an awesome and unconventional fall beer that uses a funny ingredient really expertly. i found this to be wonderful, and i wish i had it available to me for the next month or two! i could happily drink this all season long!
