We kick off our 2023 series of barrel-aged stouts with Finders Keepers. The centerpiece of this blend is some 15 month old American Imperial Stout– largely inspired by the iconic Expedition Stout that Bell’s Brewery has perfected over the last 3 decades. After 15 months in a mix of rye whiskey and Kentucky Bourbon barrels, our imperial milk stout has a huge body with distinct notes of grape candy, eggnog, and chocolate syrup.

On tap at Breakside

A- pours jet black in color with a one finger creamy khaki head that reduces to a ring and leaves some lacing behind

S- oaky bourbon barrel, dark chocolate, raisins, figs, tobacco, caramel, vanilla

T- big barrel notes up front with bold barrel juice, oak, caramel chew and vanilla. Mid-palate brings out bold dark chocolate, raisins, black cherries and black licorice. The finish gives more oaky bourbon barrel that continues into the linger with more dark chocolate

M- medium-heavy body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that turns chewy into a warming finish

On tap at Belmont Station. Pours motor oil black with an inch of brown head. The nose is fudge, molasses, maple, hazelnut, rye spice, and licorice.

Taste is phenomenal. Black licorice, whiskey, dark chocolate, vanilla, molasses, spice, burnt toffee, and a bit of lactose.

Mouthfeel is thick and creamy, and the aftertaste is black licorice and fudge. Great stout!

awesome how all these huge stouts they do all have such distinctive traits, this one is done in both rye and bourbon barrels, and the contribution of each is evident in nose and taste. i found this to have some spiciness to it, almost a spiced rum note, maybe a hint of coconut too, definite vanilla and chocolate, sort of an ice cream sundae in beer form, but even with that, not overly sweet, although definitely sweeter than some of the others we had in the same session, cool to get to drink on all these more or less at the same time, so much subtle nuance to appreciate across the board, and i think this is an underappreciated side of what these guys do! near black, viscous, short mocha head, nose of burnt coffee, spicy rye whiskey, vanilla sugar, walnut or almond or something nutty, and dark bitter chocolate, real appealing, less wood than spirit which is neat too. the flavor follows, lots of body and roast leading the way and totally coating my palate, layers pop from there, chocolate cake, maple, date, char, and good coffee. it lingers long and pleasant, isnt as outwardly alcoholic as a few of the others we had in the same session, but still warming going down. a little quicker on the back end, bitter enough to be balanced but still dessert-like too. a small doses thing, they all kind of are, but what a cool mix of barrels on this beast. stoked to have been able to indulge in all this breakside stuff with the crew!

Appearance: Pours almost black with a thin tan head that fades to a ringlet; leggy with speckles

Smell: Milk chocolate embraced by Bourbon, Rye and supplemented by molasses, licorice and spice cake tones

Taste: Milk chocolate, dried plum and molasses forward with hints of spice cake and licorice; through the middle, the Bourbon and Rye emerge, with the spicy tones of the Rye lingering into the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied and somewhat creamy; low to moderate carbonation

Overall: The best of the BA Breakside stouts I was able to obtain; but then I am a sucker for Rye
