awesome beer, ordered at the buoy temporary taproom in astoria, their chalkboard menu made no mention of it being a collaboration with breakside, but it is, looks like it was even breakside in the lead on it, hence me adding it here instead of under the buoy listing. they also made no mention of it having pumpkin in it, if in fact this is the same beer. the pumpkin is pretty subtle, and this definitely seems unspiced, a lighter, relatively simple brown ale base to me, packed with natural coconut character, if there is pumpkin here, its minimal or mostly fermented out. chocolate to chestnut brown color to this with some reddish edges and a high inch of tan head, big airy bubbles on it from the tap. the nose is toasted coconut richness, chocolate malt, lightly english on the grain side too, brown sugar, maybe some earthy sweetness that could be pumpkin, but its not obvious to me. probably had some of this leftover from the fall, calling out only the coconut now makes it seem better for the season, more intentional, i get that, and the beer is still fire, nothing old or tired about it. the coconut pops in the flavor, sweet, almost baked, coconut cream, so good with the cocoa notes of the base brown ale, which is sneaky strong for it feeling this light, the bubbles keep it light, but its not heavy, sweet, or boozy at all at the end. the malt is just right with all the coconut, lots of nuance here too, raisin, leather, toffee, and caramel, delicious! thoughtful brew, pumpkin or not, glad i got to try this one. breakside can do no wrong, and i was impressed with buoy on this visit.
