Michael Jackson lived to see the first waves of craft beer’s ascent in the US. To seek inspiration for this beer, we went back to his writings on IPA, to the words and descriptions he used to convey the taste of the American craft IPAs that he encountered in the 1990s.

The IPAs of the late ’90s were lower gravity and emphasized citrus and pine. The mindset towards hopping was more heterodox, and heavy dry hops and BU wars were ten years in the future. We pulled from a range of classic and modern American hops to create something close to this: a heavy handed approach to kettle hopping and a lighter dry hop; hops that have some floral, European attributes; and a pale, dry, and slender body. The result is a beer that drinks a bit like a classic West Coast Pilsner, if such a thing had actually existed.

Brewed to support the Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing and Distilling funds technical education and career advancement for black, indigenous, and people of color in the brewing and distilling industries.

Look: Pale yellow in color with a sudsy head that tops out as a pillow and slowly settles, leaving great lacing behind

Aroma: Lemon-lime, white grapefruit, raspberries, wafts of melon, peach, and bready malt

Taste: Opens up with a good hit of peach and raspberries that hold well individually before blending and developing depth. Melon kicks around for a moment, joined soon after by lemon-lime and grapefruit and these all mingle through to the close, signaled by a light bite

Mouthfeel: Full, clean, medium-high carbonation, and lightly dry on the finish

Overall: I dig it. This is a tasty WCIPA that has a unique trio of frontrunners, flavor-wise – peach, lemon-lime, and raspberries – and checks all the style boxes appropriately. Delicious, well-made, and a treat and surprise from my brother. Thank bro!

Many thx to much loveforhops3 for this can!

A - Light medium gold pour with a creamy lacing ring and low carbonation.

S - Very faint citrus and floral.

T - Crackery malt with light citrus, delicate earthy spice, and just the right amount of pine bitterness to round things out.

M - Medium body with sprightly carbonation.

O - Old school done right.

From a 4-pack picked up at Growlers on Main in Polson, MT
16oz can poured into a Ben's Bottle Shop nonic pint

P pours a clear yellow/gold with plenty of active carb; 1f-worth of foamy white head; looks good
N soft-med nose of semi-sweet juicy citrus notes; a touch of floral character as well; gets bolder as it warms; grapefruit becomes prevalent; pleasant for sure
T bright, juicy, ripe semi-sweet oranges over crackery malt; candied floral notes beneath; finishes w/ some orange peel; light-med bitterness; clean and tasty; grapefruit notes as well as the profile opens up
Mf light-med bodied; crisp; med-high to high carb; pairs well with the profile
O excellent stuff- flavorful, clean, and super drinkable
