Served chilled in a snifter.
Best before: May 2013
Appearance: Merlin's Mild appears a deep brown in the glass, with a back light revealing a clear, deep red body. A rough pour yields a large beige coloured head that lasts quite well and leaves some patchy lacing as it recedes.
Smell: Mmmm, this smells pretty good. The initial nose is dominated by toasted notes, alongside oats (I wonder if they used oats in this brew), a little chocolate, some toffee and the faintest touch of roasted malt. As the beer begins to warm, the nose increases in strength and complexity, with a fruity English ale character (almost reminiscent of wine gums) as well as some floral hop aromas becoming apparent.
Taste: Sadly, the flavour is a far cry from the nose and comes off as watery and very uninteresting. About all that I noted was: A little fruity sweetness, a light toasted note and a light bitterness in the finish.
Mouthfeel: Unfortunately the mouthfeel is almost as bad as the flavour - light, water body with a high level of harsh carbonation.
Overall: I really enjoyed the nose on this one, but sadly the flavour and mouthfeel killed the beer! I doubt I would buy this again.
