Modest head production and poor retention; not entirely unexpected for the style. Body is dark and inky, with purplish tinges.
The nose carries far more oak than I would have guessed. Bourbon and peppers are next in strength, followed by vanilla and roasted barley. A ton of booze from a wine inhale.
Flavor more or less follows, with much more vanilla (both up front and on the back end). Mild but noticeable pepper heat up front. Overall a fairly sweet brew, with the bourbon, cinnamon, and vanilla taking the punch away from the roasted malt and the chocolate. A touch too sweet and overall muddled to be considered world class, but it's tasty and enjoyable nonetheless.
Smooth on the palate; a touch hot, and a touch thin. Pepper heat grows slightly with each sip.
I'm finding this beer more enjoyable as I go - probably due to the increasing pepper heat (still mild overall). It's absolutely a dessert stout, to be sure. It's worth the very reasonable asking price.

A - Pitch black pour, no lacing, no carbonation, and very viscous and clear on the sides of the glass.
S - Nose is on the light side for bourbon barrel beer. Cocoa, light chocolate, bourbon, delicate vanilla and oak.
T - Cocoa, bittersweet chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, light cinnamon, and some slight peppery spiciness. The ABV is extremely well hidden.
M - Full bodied, light syrupy, lip smacking sticky, silky on the tongue.
O - This is a very nice beer. Recommended.
