Decent head production from a modest pour, considering the style, ABV, and barrel aging. Head quickly disappears, leaving behind only a slight oily sheen and light scattered bubbles under the surface along the edge of the glass. Body is relatively clear, and a dark, nutty brown, a shade lighter than cola, and reminiscent of prunes.
Malty-sweet on the nose, with tones of caramel, brown sugar, honey, bourbon, banana, nuts, dark bread, and figs. Minor alcohol burn through the nose.
Similar on the palate: quite sweet, but in a malty way. Not a ton of hops, although there are notes of earth, leather, pepper, bark, and pine. Despite the high ABV and high sweetness, it has a crisp cleanness; it's full bodied and a touch sticky, but it isn't chewy or thick.
Flavor notes are really similar to the nose: nuts, banana, honey, oak, bourbon mash, coconut, brown sugar, caramel, rye bread, fruit bread, figs, and dates.
A really nice beer, but perhaps a touch too sweet.
