Poured into North Brewery fluted snifter/fat tulip; jet black with a thin brown head from a hard pour. Head is made of large bubbles but leaves tiny lacing as it descends.
Smells like a barrel-aged dark beer; cocoa, toffee, whiskey, vanilla, oak. Only a slight hint of the sour in the scent.
Taste is just as you'd expect...a sour porter. The sourness is well-balanced though; if you didn't know there was Lacto in the barrel with it you could almost ascribe the flavor completely to barrel character.
Mouthfeel is slick and smooth, medium-bodied.
Overall, I like this one a lot better than the original Black Donald. The Lactobacillus adds a unique flavor to it that really makes it awesome.
