Poured from growler.
Pour is brownish-black with a 3/4" tan head, tight, lasting. With every tilt of the glass a fresh supply rises.
Nose is soft chocolate and, to a lesser extent, roasted malt.
Taste begins with a small hit of bitter coffee that is quickly dominated by an unwavering base of unsweetened chocolate. A smooth lacto-sweetness accompanies the chocolate base, but the two are perceived separately. Chocolate never fades, but remains as an undercurrent, not "in your face". Finishes slightly dry, with a probably imagined pinch of bitter hop. As it warms, the mostly bitter chocolate is softened, a hint of vanilla is imagined.
Mouthfeel is quite soft, and surprisingly light .... not a thick stout at all.
Overall, this is a fantastic natural chocolate stout, with the Irish malt and oatmeal components making it a noticeably smoother and more enticing version than the original. Seek it out if you like chocolate stouts that aren't overly sweet and retain their roastiness.
