Poured from fresh mini-growler into imperial pint glass. Black in the glass, showing translucent brown on the edges. Barely any head even though I poured it like Moroccan tea; a thin ring of foam was all that appeared. It does leave nice rings as it's drunk. Not the beer's fault though, it's a growler-fill from an older keg (this beer wasn't on tap anymore, but the brewmaster pulled out the keg and hooked it up for folks to try). Anyways, this one's described as a chocolate cherry stout, cherry honey stout, or black forest cake stout, depending on which webpage you read.
Smell is spot on as expected; chocolate, roasted malt, slight cherry, coffee, and some hints of general sweetness.
Taste starts out sweet, with some cherry and chocolate sweetness, but then the bitter roasted malt comes in with good old stout flavors of coffee and baking chocolate. Finish is bittersweet, with some sticky remnants of the cherry coming back in the aftermath of the dark roasted barley. Alcohol is very hidden for 8%, only noticeable now and again when your nose opens up during a swallow.
Mouthfeel is smooth and medium-full, little sticky.
Overall, an awesome prequel to the North Brewery's stout season...too bad I'll be away at school for most of it, but I'll definitely be stopping in whenever I'm home for a weekend or whatnot.
