On tap at Basil T's, Red Bank, NJ.

This beer is not retired.

Rusty brown color, with a small tan head that fizzled down to a thin ringlet; minimal lacing. Aroma of generic dark malts, light hints of coffee and cocoa. More of this in the taste, dark malts, light roast, notes of coffee and unsweetened chocolate, anise, and the ever-present apple off-flavor that I picked up in just about every beer Basil T's had to offer. Light-medium body, thin for the style. Nothing interesting or memorable here.

Had this in my big ass 24 ounce mug club ceramic mug. My appearance score is based on my observations of my sister's pint, as the mugs are opaque.

A - A nice brown color that may actually glow tan when held in light. Hard to tell in the dimly lit bar. About a finger and a half of off white head with decent staying power and fairly nice lacing left behind.

S - Nice smell. Some powdered hot cocoa mix, sugary sweetness but fairly light on the nose.

T - A nice chocolatey flavor. Roastiness is nice and subdued, only hints at the tiniest coffee notes. Very balanced flavor with the sweetness restrained and rounded out by (very) slight hop flavor.

M - Fairly light in body for the style.

D - A very easy drinker. A nice session porter, and a great brew to see at Basil T's when you're not in the mood for the roastiness/coffee flavor of their dry stout. Good sessionable dark beer.

The beer pours a dark brown/black color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a dry, yet malty scent that boasts of chocolate and patent malts. The taste is good as well. It has a grainy chocolate and patent malt flavor that goes down easy and finishes smooth and dry. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a very drinkable porter. It's dry and grainy with loads of flavor and a smooth finish; a excellent sessions beer.

a very nice but faiirly simple porter from basil t's red bank. it pours a dark dark brown colour with a thinnish off-white head which leaves a decent amount of residue on the glass. this one looked very nice and until sampling it was hard to tell it from the stout on appearance alone. the smell is of caramel malt and chocolate. some hop notes can be detected here and there as well. the hops are much more apparent in the flavour and cut into the chocolate and malt flavours nicely to provide for a nice balanced flavour. caramel shows up throughout, until the finish which is a little mor edry than expected, but nice. this one is always a solid choice when at basil t's, and is easily one of the better beers brewed at the brewpub.
