12 ounce bottle into a pilsner glass. No date on bottle, but I believe it’s way, way past fresh. Had 5/14/18.

Pours a classic golden color, clear, with a massive, foamy head on a gentle pour. Active carbonation, lots of foamy cling. Smells classic, too- yeast, hops, malt. Also some smoke, caramel, light black pepper. Has a bit of a sweet aroma. The taste is a little more subdued and starts with the hops, then malt, some caramel, light yeast, faint smoke, some hop bitterness that builds to the finish. Mostly smooth, a decent light body, well carbonated on the high side.

This actually held up well. Really not much smoke here, unless the age stripped that down. Pretty well balanced, and the smoked malts give it a very nice aroma. This may not be a style leader, but it’s certainly better than the rating it has.

A - Medium amber color with nice clarity and very little head or lacing.

S - Toasted caramel malt with slight smokiness.

T - Light earthiness, toasted caramel, light smoke, and ends with a piney bitterness with a little bit of citrus buried in the back ground.

M - Big medium body and slightly watery on the back end. Very little carbonation.

O - If you're really thirsty, this is an easy drinker that's very quaffable and hits the spot. I was very thirsty.

A: The beer is relatively clear amber in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high beige head that died down, leaving lacing on the surface, a narrow collar running around the edge, and some specks of bubbles down the sides of the glass.
S: Faint aromas of smoked pork are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has stronger flavors of smoked bologna along with notes of mild caramel malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied and clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: For a lager made with smoked meats, I found this to be rather interesting. The smokiness was not overdone.

A: Slightly hazy brown color with a large white head.

S: Slightly acidic, with light malt and a straw aroma, following that is a light smoke smell as well as a little more cider vinegar smell.

T: Tart and acidic with vinegar notes, as well as a hint of smoke. Not bad, but it seems like it is out of form..

M: Light with fairly active carbonation.

O: Overall this is a bit of a miss for me. I think I got a funky bottle, not unbearable in fact slightly interesting, but not really good. It's either infected, or totally off mark for style.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a cloudy, dark golden/orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, light smokiness. Taste is meaty, malts, a bit unusual and not really to my liking. Feels medium/light bodied in the mouth and overall is a mediocre beer.

On-tap 5/20/2016 at Doherty’s Ale House in Warwick, RI, served in a tapered pint glass.

A: The beer is a dark golden brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains lager yeast, some smoke, some fruit, caramelized malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of lager yeast and a hearty malt character. Then some smokiness comes in along with some caramel and fruit sweetness. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a decent balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for a while.

Had it right out of the bottle at a local business event. This was not a bad tasting beer . For a lager , produced from a small brewery, this one can hold its own . This is a very well balanced beer. A nice medium mouth feel with just enough carbonation to do the job ! Because of the low ABV, this beer can be enjoyed anytime , any place ! This brewery is starting to make some fantastic products. This is the 3rd different beer I had from this company. Because my job takes me in to this part of the state of Pa, the next time I am in the area, I will make a point of stopping by the brew pub to see what other products they have on site ! Its not the greatest, but is also not the worst.

Kutztown Lager has a thin-to-medium, off-white head, an initially clear, slightly bubbly, amber/copper appearance, but with very big, dark yeast chunks, sinking to the bottom. When the caked sediment is swished loose and poured in, the beer clouds up, with a tan pillow and more tan sediment. Aroma is of sweet, dark bread crust (think of Roman Meal brand bread), and the taste is of smoked pork, with brown bread, a touch of sour, cherry wood, and balancing bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium, and Kutztown Lager finishes crisp and odd and interesting, to say the least.

DATE TASTED: February 21, 2016... GLASSWARE: Samuel Adams special lager ... OCCASION: an unseasonably warm afternoon calls for a lager... APPEARANCE: an eruption of thick, craggy, off-white head towers from the glass, iceberg-style, standing up to room temperature better than the glaciers themselves, unfortunately... a cloudy, dense orange amber body distorts all background, but the massive exodus of upward bubbles proudly suggests freshness...the label's not too bad on the eyes, either... AROMA: some bitterness is suggested earliest, followed by caramel... the thin smokiness really doesn't frame this beer's expectations as the label does...vague baking smells do not help either... PALATE: light to medium bodied, with a swift intake... what can only be worded as a vodka-esque end lingers in the throat--a strange fire... TASTE: struggling to place this taste, with slight smokiness and pronounced hops bringing about floral, pungent, grapefruit... the caramel is a but rusty, and the dough is a bit spicy...should I be wondering about its freshness ... OVERALL: this beer manages to bring nuance to a style that often lacks distinction, though the results are mixed--a hoppier lager with devolved lager traits, this beer doesn't smoke nearly enough for my taste, though it does refresh with subtle flavor to exceed the average mouth rinser...
