Bottled 12/2016; purchased at Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville. Poured into an all-purpose tulip glass; served around 35 deg. F.
L: Deep red-copper; bright; thin head dissipates quickly after vigorous pour. Not much lacing.
S: Oak and gin botanicals come through strong; no discrete hop aroma; juniper, citrus peel, and a little almond.
T: Botanicals and hops upfront—blended well enough that my palate can't pull them apart easily—oak and alcohol (similar to bourbon barrel aged beers) coming in next. Malts never come through; dries out quickly. Booze is perceptible. Very interesting flavors to taste together; probably not to drink more than once or twice.
F: Crisp and dry; this is a big beer that will probably go well with warm weather, fruits, and grilled foods (think gin). But the mouthfeel seems a little too thin and dry for the weight. Not sure if this is a trick of the gin or not.
O: I would recommend trying this beer. The gin barrel treatment has made this very interesting. This should not be considered an imperial IPA (no real perceptible hops or malts), but is certainly worth checking out if you can.
