Darker than expected - a brownish-tinged orange. Good head production and retention; nice lacing. Not a pulpy haze bomb, but it's cloudy enough to come across more translucent than transparent; you can't quite read through it.
Lovely aroma, with a throwback hop profile of grapefruit, resin, floral notes, and candied orange, and a noticeable malt backbone presenting notes of caramel and honeycomb.
Similar on the palate: it's a bit of a throwback IPA. Nicely bitter, but not over the top. The double digit ABV isn't too potent, and the caramel and pale malt base is mostly supportive of the hops. Light pale graininess. Tasting notes include lemon, grapefruit, resin, caramel, and pale grains. Long aftertaste of grapefruit peel.
Drinks pretty smooth; very lively and not at all syrupy. While there's some back end chest heat from the alcohol level, it's extremely approachable for such a big beer.
