A simple Red X identifies the German malt blend that we fell in love with back in 2014 and it also symbolizes our secret, shameful, hoppy obsession: our brewer’s quest for a hop forward red ale that deserved to bear this standard, the Red X, indicating to everyone far and wide, “Yes, I do love IPAs, and Yes, they do come in Red now.” Buried under a scandalous amount of Myrcene laden hops, robust notes of toast, toffee, and stone fruit struggle to gain your affection, but it is the hops you’re after. Bear your mark hop head, for the Red X is a symbol of your luponic love affair as well!

16oz can, stamped 7.12.16, poured into a Triptych shaker pint glass.
The beer pours a nice clean amber color, reddish hues with some burnt orange as well, just a touch of chill haze with a nice finger of off white head, foamy and soapy with decent retention and nice soapy lace. The aroma is very nice, piney, earthy, spicy with plenty of amber malts, sweet but rustic, definitely smells like autumn. The flavors are nice, smooth amber maltiness, bitter pine, light grapefruit peel, hop spice, oily resins, dead leaves and crusty brown bread, really balanced for how hop forward this is. The mouthfeel is good, medium body, lively carbonation, coating, smooth texture with a light prickliness and a mildly dry but refreshing finish.
Verdict: A really nice Red IPA/Amber Ale from Triptych. Pretty simple flavorwise, but well executed and quite refreshing. This is definitely the kind of beer I want for the transition from summer to autumn, hoppy and bold but more earthy and warming. While it's not conforming to the trendy yeasty hop explosions of late, this beer is definitely a winner.
