Dark brown to black with ruby highlights, a full creamy tan head that lasts, decent carbonation, and decent lace rings. Roasty malt aroma is prominent -- hard to discern much else. Roast malt flavor dominates with no hoppiness apparent. Light-medium bodied. A very nice session porter.

Very nice Brown Porter which I'd like to compare to other English ones... as usual, hard to compare to American Porters.

Label states: "Hartford End Brewery"

(16.9 oz English style bottle)

Witchfinder Porter pours very dark with a tight head. It fits perfectly into my pint glass from England. (Duh) The head quickly turns into a super-thin layer after a few minutes.

Its aroma is a nice one of roasted malt. I smell nuts and coffee in this porter. No hop aroma.

It has a nutty, coffee-like flavor much like its smell. There may be some tannin flavor in there, but that may be on purpose considering all the roasted malt used. It finishes with a creamy aftertaste. This porter is drier than the American porters I'm used to.

Its has a medium body. There is a note of substance in there, but it's not heavy.

Overall I think this is a session porter. I probably wouldn't drink it if other porters were available, but it's hard to mess up a porter. Witchfinder is just above average, nothing more.

Big beefy bottle, pours nearly pitch black, amber shines through when held up to sunlight, head was almost non-existant. Lots of baker's chocolate, malts, and grain bread on the nose. Very mellow maltiness throughout the drink. Very thin for my liking, drinkable but not likable enough to drink that much back-to-back.

a pretty good porter from ridley's and the potential is there for greater things, but the aromas and flavours are far too subtle in this brew's current form. there's alot there, but everything seems to be in the background. pours a nice dark, dark brown colour with amber tones. also holds a light tan head that is approximately 1/2 inch in size. the smell is a little of each: chocolate, malt, sweetness, coffee, earth, toast/bread. pretty complex, but, as stated earlier, nothing takes charge here. everything seems to be in the back, which presents somewhat of a thin smell up front. ths medium bodied brew has most of te same charateristics of the smell, but again, nothing dominates. there is a nice dry, burnt finish which boasts the biggest flavour of the beverage. mouthfeel is a tad too thin for a porter, but not bad overall. this one needs to be a bit bolder in many different aspects. as it is now, it's above average, but from what was tasted, it could be a hell of a lot better with some tinkering.
