Pours really dark ruby, brown tinges, poor off-white head, pretty much a few specks here and there.
Sherry shines on the nose, nice oak, some extra alcohol, otherwise just faint raisin, faint caramel, faint malt sweetness. Reminds me of a Flanders sour, kinda.
Taste is actually pretty complex. Sherry and bourbon fight with the rich quad malts in the front, and the result is actually pretty awesome. Rich dark fruit, lots of plum, tart cherries, raisin, but on steroids, with a rich sweet alcoholic sherry note, without sacrificing any of the tartness. Caramel and toffee right away, trying to silence the extra booze, but not enough. Still, the quad notes are thick and clear, with a nice and spicy cake feel, with some chocolate, lots of caramel and a nice citrus peely zing. Alcohol settles in the finish, pretty earthy, with some yeast and some really nice oak (brings soft vanilla too).
Aftertaste has cocoa powder, a big oak character, lingering palate-numbing alcohol and some sherry sweetness. Medium body, smooth carbonation.
There isn't a "medicinal alcohol" note, as with other bad barrel aged beers, but it's still pretty boozy. Sherry oak chips are so rich and clear, surely backed by the Bourbon barrel (tho there are only faint hints of Bourbon whisky, per se), providing a nice tartness to go with the tasty quadruple underneath (that brings really good notes, too, i wonder if the regular Teppistenbier is good). Awesome beer!
