Maybe my standards are too high: there's nothing wrong with this, but maybe it lacks some oomph. Not much to look at, but smells alluring with something sweet but dark lurking. The taste is standard Belgian quad, some dark fruit countered by the Belgian yeast, mouthfeel is a little syrupy but gets a nice foam if you lightly swish. It could be the Calvados that drags this back: it needs a brightness or a kick. Too mellow to stand out.

L: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a dark, mahogany brown color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, off white, somewhat long-lasting head. Sparse lacing.
S: A decent, but not great, aroma of Belgian yeast, candi fruit, spices, and a slightly boozy quality.
T: Tasted of a small amount of spices (pepper, mainly), some Belgian yeast (a little spicy), a decent amount of candi fruit (apples, for the most part), and some of the boozy quality (the Calvados, it would seem). This is one of those flavors that doesn't stray too far from the middle. It's not bad, but lacks a certain punch.
F: A good amount of carbonation with a lively finish. Medium-bodied.
O: An uneven beer, but it has its charms. Worth a try.
