Pours a pitch black coloration with a medium, frothy head. Smells of caramel malt and tart red berries, with just a hint of oaky tannins coming through as well. Taste follows the nose, being dominated by caramel malt and tart red berries: redcurrant, cranberry, with lighter notes of dark fruit: plum, raisin and just a hint of oaky tannins and herbal hops. Finishes with a medium tartness and some red berries and oaky tannins lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.
The aging in red wine barrels really shows here with a strong vinous character dominated by tart red berries and oaky tannins, as well as lighter notes of caramel malt and dark fruits. An interesting and accomplished take on the style, but that strong, vinous character is not going to be for everyone.
