I thought this was delicious. It's a beautiful deep brown, and tastes like complex malty goodness. I enjoyed every sip fresh from the brewery. Will definitely seek it out when it becomes available again, really enjoyed it.

32 ounce growler from the brewery at Ballard. poured to wine glass
Appearance: Deep red brown color if held against the light, medium head that disappears, lacing
Smell: not a lot of aroma
Taste: very good, toasted grains
Mouthfeel: very good, fizzy, creamy, bitter aftertaste
Overall: very good beer, ok to repeat, but not something to look forward to.

I'm tempted to rate this beer higher to bring up the average, but that's not fair or honest and it'll average out anyway once more reviews come in.

L: Beautiful dark brown black color. Head is 1/2 inch white and smooth.

S: Smells are balanced and not a lot stand out. I do smell a little caramel and a hint of alcohol.

T: Lots of flavor, dark malts come through and there's some woodiness as well. Not as strong as if it were oaked but lingers on the palate. Something sweet too like marshmallow. You can also taste hops on the back end which helps brighten it up after the dark beginning and leaves you with a warm campfire woodiness.

F: Medium body and medium strong carbonation. The strength of the flavor doesn't last long but trails to a very long lingering finish.

O: A really nice winter ale. I can see it's not for everyone especially if you're not used to the darker profiles in beer or don't like the woodiness this one has but it's a well done winter ale that I'll be looking for again next year.
