Brewed in collaboration with Floodland of Seattle and Heirloom Rustic Ales of Tulsa. This Strong Pale Mild Ale is our modern interpretation of a 19th Century XX. Brewed with 100% Maris Otter Malt and hopped heavily in the kettle with Fuggles and Goldings, and in the hopback with whole-leaf Hallertau Mittelfruh.

Pours a mostly clear golden color with a foamy white that leaves a nice cap on the body as you drink the beer. The nose features a wonderful biscuity malt aroma and some fruity, floral hop notes. Wow.

The taste is led by the delicious biscuity malt flavor, with some honey and a grassy hop flavor that works exceptionally well with the malt base. I could literally drink a keg of this.

The mouthfeel is medium and fairly bright and SOOOO easy to drink. I don’t see many examples of this style (this is my second English Pale Mild Ale), but I need more of them because this is world class, IMHO.

16.9oz/500mL bottle purchased at Nectar, in Kendall Yards, Spokane, WA, for $11.99. To date, that is the only place I have found bottles from MH in Spokane.

Poured into a Hidden Mother (RIP) snifter, this was a lovely dark amber color, slightly coppery in hue. Good sized and sudsy eggshell-white head. Lots of lace.

Floral and biscuity in the nose, with a touch of hay.

Mellow fruitiness from the English yeast, with a floral and grassy hoppiness and a grainy, bready maltiness. Slightly dry hoppy bitterness at the finish that is ever so restrained.

Light to medium in body, it doesn't drink like something 7.4% abv. Almost effervescent, really.

Loved this. Whenever I drink a canned or bottled UK beer that is probably a fantastic cask bitter but is pretty weak stateside after it's packaging in a can or bottle and the ensuing voyage across the pond, this is the kind of thing I'm hoping for. Utterly delicious. Would love to get to Machine House and drink something like this fresh at the source.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium coppery amber with a two finger white head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of biscuit malt, grassy hops, graham cracker, summer hay; malty and quite floral. Flavor is biscuit malt, grassy and floral hops, apple, graham and white crackers, flowery hay, vague fruit esters and a touch of buttery diacetyl (which is to-style for a mild). Sturdy hop bitterness in the finish. Possibly one the most floral forward hopped beers I've ever had, while backing the floral component with solid grainy, biscuity malt. Usually I find English hops grassy and staid, but this hop bill is very interesting and complex. I can't find any information on the XX ale they are trying to replicate, but I'm guessing it was not quite as well hopped nor as high an ABV. But that's not a bad thing, a mellow version of this would not have been as fun to drink. I really like the aggressive hopping and deep malt here and the floral notes are icing on the cake. I really liked the Vintage Ale I had the other day from these guys, but this might be my favorite ale they have ever brewed. Certainly one of the most enjoyable English style ales I've had. Big fan.
