12th Anniversary Norfolk Bitter, 4.1%. Another year, another boring old cask Bitter. Whatever, we love making these beers and will keep exploring new ways to approach this simple style.
The star of this one is Brown Malt. We used a good chunk of quality British Brown Malt in the mash along with some Crystal and Rye malts for a robust flavor and body despite its light and refreshing abv. Hopped with some First Gold and Admiral from the UK, and just a subtle seasoning of Citra.

Clear dark amber brew with plenty of foam in the Pilsner glass. Grainy aroma with some green notes. After the brief flirtation with the malt and rye, this turns very bitter. I think the British style "Bitter" gives brewers the idea that it should be REALLY bitter. I never had a Bitter in England or Wales that was this bitter. I give this some strokes for being flavorful with a lower alcohol content, at least. From the 16 oz can purchased at Special Brews in Lynnwood. Not dated, but seems to be a new one-off brew.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium to dark coppery amber with a quarter finger white head with that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of biscuit malt, Postum, mild light molasses and light grassy hops. Flavor is lightly toasted biscuit malt, molasses, tea, mild lemon and grassy hops; assertive grassy hops in the finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A pleasantly malty bitter with a bit more hop bitterness than expected, but welcome. Hops are fairly English in profile, but the Citra is noticeable as a light note. The combination toastiness in the malt and notable bitterness makes the finish reminiscent of a schwarzbier, although the overall character is solid English bitter. It took a bit of tracking down to find this one, and it showed up in a grocery store, so glad to find it. As often the case with Machine House beers, nice flavor depth and complexity for a low ABV brew. Nicely done.
