With the gluten free diet in mind, the brewers at Rickoli are all about big flavor but from a small brewery. Crafted, loved and brought to the drinker with care, they embark upon the impossible- a barleywine that showcases what's best about this gluten rich style, but without the tricky protein.
Dark crimson and mahogany shades rest underneath a spritzy, billowing but then still froth. Rich aromas of caramel, cola, apple and dark fruit lead the way with the rich sweetness of sorghum, toffee, cola and pecan forming first impressions of sweetness, toasted and nutty flavor.
And that sweet movement stretches across the middle palate and lays tracks of syrups, sugars and toasted pecan in its wake. All along, the taste of fruits arise with candied apple, maraschino cherry, date and fig for a rich fruitcake culmination. Boozy and spicy, the beer's finish is laces with bourbon, oak and caramels from the oak.
Full bodied but never viscous or overly heavy, the beer's body is somber and brandy-like with spice. Lightly vinous, the taste of bourbon only adds to the beer's spice, numbness and heat. A long and tacky aftertaste of cola persists with the notion of peanut skins and peppery acetone panging away at the late palate.
