Formerly Cherry Bark Biere De Garde

Bottle-conditioned beer brewed over a wood fire in our copper kettle with grain from our friends at sugar creek malt, nugget hops from cl hops, and wild cherry bark foraged from the woods surrounding our brewery. woodsy, slightly smoky bark character with bright cherry aromas and a clean, malt-forward finish.

Appearance - The beer was golden in color with visible carbonation.

Smell- The nose had notes of the style with pleasant farmhouse funk.

Taste - Dry funk was found at the front before the cherry became apparent. The cherry notes were a bit odd, with some smokiness. Light cherry lingered to the finish.

Mouthfeel - The beer was aggressively carbonated. It left a dry finish and a thirst for more.

Overall - Well done!

poured from a 750mL bottle into a taster. foggy, almost hazy orange with a firm white foam cap. mild funk on the nose. a hint of cherry and oak. taste has a much more cherry-forward flavor but still nothing in your face, which i dig. medium-full mouthfeel. just enough carb. this is quite good. haven’t had a lot from these guys but us very well balanced between the funkiness and the sourness.

Nope, not for me! The smell was very inviting, with subtle cherry, bold earthiness, mushroom and slight maple, with a backing of soft wood. The taste was slightly fruit-sour sawdust. Way too much wood, I couldn't even finish the glass, and I love big wood elements in beer. I think the sour and dusty/grainy texture was part of what got to me. No balance

absolutely astoundingly good beer from these guys again. their sours are fun and all, but this is exactly what they do best, a neat foraged ingredient meets a cool earthy malt driven beer of the finest quality. this is done with wild cherry bark, and it sure does add a lot. there is a cool woodiness to the paler colored base beer, decidedly not oak, which is so rare these days, its like a wet forest floor in autumn, but the beer is dry, the bark has a sweetness to it that goes really well with the grain in here, and i get notes of fallen leaves, maple syrup and honey, baked bread, and subtle smoke, its wonderful, and it has a cool french type saison yeast meets bready english strain, hearty and spicy and interesting, not sure what they use but it comes through as unique here for sure. the bark is strong in this, and when i think about it, i do get some dried cherry too, like the sweet fruit somehow comes through in the soft woodiness of this, some golden raisin and even dried apricot too, amazingly interesting, woody in a way i have only known in other scratch beers, no others. smooth to drink on, brilliantly carbonated, somewhat light in texture for the denseness and heavy autumnal vibe of the flavors. this is exquisite, and it has me wanting more cherry bark beers, there is an incredible flavor to it that really defines this one. mind blown again by scratch!
