maybe i am a fanboy of scratch, okay, i definitely am a fanboy, but they are making some of the best and most unique beers on the planet right now, and they have my full respect and attention and then some. so stoked to see the odd sprinkle come to colorado. this was on tap at jakes in littleton, which warrants some praise of its own! a hazy burnt orange rusty color, with a small but very white bubbly head on it. aroma is slightly smokey, like decomposing leaves, it takes me to autumn right away like so many of the scratch beers have before this one. the oak leaf aspect is so obvious in the nose, like i should be half allergic to it or something, but it also sort of functions as an aphrodisiac, and im into this hard. the turmeric in the flavor tastes dusty to me, powdered rather than fresh, like the yellow stuff from the bottle, it has that dusty old thing going on, delicious, especially with the cider vinegary wild sour element, but its also very strange. the oak leaf has a wood smoke, and the beer tastes ancient to me, devoid of fresh hops or any real botanical element, and bacterial in a patient sense, an incredibly interesting flavor profile that shows soft turmeric adding to an already earthy fall wilderness complexion, weird and awesome. the acidity is just a touch high for me, and i didnt get a second one for this reason, it could be mellowed a little but its hard to critique something this distinct and well done at all. huge fan of the brewery, delighted by the beer. brilliant work again from these folks!
