Quite handsome appearance; dark brown with a beige-toned enthusiastic foam in the slim Cristal Alken nonic. Aroma of roasted grain. Sudsy in the mouth. From the 32 oz growler filled today at the Solana Beach brewery.
This is a different sort of Black IPA. You could call it a Strong American Ale that happens to have a lot of hops. There are characteristics of a stout, with all the roasted and blackened malt.
Slightly winey. Woody and rustic. Rather bitter, especially after a glass. Sharp edged but not overly acidic. There is a sweet malty base that mellows every sip, and then the bitterness and tannins wash over for the aftertaste. ANother clean and interesting brew from Culture, though not one of my favorites.
