Had two 16 oz pours of this beer on draft while visiting the brewery. Beer served in a tuliped snifter and relatively cold. A soft creamy beige head of 1 cm rests on the surface of the glass. The aroma is roasted grains and some dark chocolate (high cacao richness) not really any sweetness on the malt profile. Also no real hint of hop character. There may be a little coffee note, but mostly dark chocolate and roasted malts. Certainly no ABV hint.
First sip reveals a soft and smooth textured beer with very mild and gentle carbonation. Beer rolls across my palate easily and doesnt leave any sort of sticky feel or coating. Drinks smooth and easy.
Flavor is similar to the nose with roasted malts and dark chocolate, maybe just a little bit of sweeter malt, but again dark chocolate dominates. not quite bitterness that high cacao chocolate can give you. No hop character nor ABV on the flavor either. This beer drinks really easy and I enjoy my glasses as the first beers of an afternoon brewery tour of SD.
Nice beer to mixup the heavy selection of IPAs on tap!
