On tap at Churchill's Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and fruity aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but has a slightly better smell in my opinion.

On tap at the new brewpub in Solana Beach. The place had just been open a few days when I visited on March 2. Brewery says this is made with Perle and Saaz hops, and rates it at 40 IBU. Out of the tap it was a frothy pour and took a long time to fill the 10 oz tulip glass.

This tastes a lot like a Milk Stout. Loads of flavor. Chocolate, raspberry sorbet, cherry cordial chocolates, and a winey sensation. A creamy ending mellows out the flavors. A hint of raspberry salad dressing in the nose. Fairly rich, but more tart and winey than most Imperial Stouts. Quite drinkable, all in all. An interesting take on the style. It will be interesting to see what these guys come up with.
