This is about as black a beer as I've seen. Decent head and a jolly carbonation in the mouth that lasts nicely. The darkness is the main feature. The maltiness becomes more distinct as you sip. Lots of hop flavors with a wintergreen note. Brewer says this uses Hallertauer hops and rates this brew at 31 IBUs. Somewhat bitter, but the many shades of roasted and charred malt are on display.
The flavor is so rich and the body so substantial it would be interesting to see what they could do with a 4.0% version. A great balance of the burnt flavors without any sourness, the bitter hops, and the lingering sweet malty tang. On tap at the brewpub in Solana Beach.
