Got this from Bert's Bierhuis in Utrecht.
From a bottle into a snifter
EBU: 45
Hops: Challenger and Willamette
Yeast: Nottingham
APPEARANCE: A transparent brown pour yields a two finger, medium looking, creamy light tan head with good retention. Bistre brown body with lots of carbonation evident. Head fades to a nice foam cap and clings to the sides of the glass. A splotchy wisp remains with lots of nice lacing all the way down. Too thin a body, but great looking head. Scores average out here.
SMELL: Licorice, leather and tobacco on the nose. Touches of dark chocolate, but the leather and tobacco are more prevalent. This is very low country for the style.
TASTE: Follows the nose with licorice, leather, tobacco, and some bitter dark chocolate at the swallow. Aftertaste is bold and persistent with bitter ashy notes, leather, and lots of tobacco flavors. Some floral and chocoalte bitterness lingers as well. Not my style, but bold and well made.
PALATE: Medium body and higher levels of carbonation. Enough weight on the palate, creamy as well, goes down smooth and finishes slightly sticky. A little lighter than the IPA, but decent enough.
OVERALL: This is another example of the leather and tobacco ridden heavy stouts that we're seeing brewed here in the The Netherlands. This is a well made example of the style, but it's just not my style of big stout, unfortunately. That said, this might be your thing, so this beer, and brewery for that matter, is well worth checking out. Recommended.
