More malt. More hops. Less happy. Just right.

I miss this style of beer that was so popular several years ago. Nice hoppy, malty mess of a beer but I like it.
Had this beer at the brewery poured from tap into a tulip glass. Nice brownish red color with a creamy white head and great curtain lacing. Toffee, bready malt smell and taste. Birch. Pleasant!

On tap at Barrel House in Dayton OH. Shared a 32oz pitcher with friends in globe snifters.
Appearance: Clear copper-amber with a off-white head. Plenty of persistent lacing in fine strands and small islands all over the glass.
Smell: Fresh cut citrus, more orange and sweet in character.
Taste: Nicely hoppy balanced with a solid dose of malt. Hops were citrus (orange, lemon) with a hint of tropical fruits and berry notes. The malt was nicely sweet to counter the hops, but not cloying. Bready and bringing a sweet-tart like note from sip to sip. The finish was again citrus like in character, with a bit of piney bitterness to counter the sweetness in the middle.
Mouthfeel: Just right carbonation. A bit sticky on the teeth.
Overall / Drinkability: A very tasty and fully flavored amber which had aspects of a DIPA to it considering all the malt. This was billed as an imperial Amber and it certainly fits the bill as a much stronger amber, but approaching the character of a balanced DIPA (not a hop bomb of a DIPA). Dangerously drinkable and perhaps more so due to the special on this beer - 32oz mini-pitcher for $5. Definitely something I would have again. Well crafted from start to finish. The only potential drawback, and it's minor, is a light aroma.

I really like the happy amber but think this Unhappy Amber is better. Wish they had this year round!
