12oz canned 1/11/19 (1 month ago) poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 9.5% ABV. The beer pours bright honey colored amber with sticky off white head. The head recedes slowly to a cap and leaves plenty of spotty lacing. The aroma is candied orange, tangerine, grapefruit and lemon. The taste is semisweet caramel with a firm hop bitterness and a vague citrus and piney flavor. A little alcohol is present in the taste. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, adequately carbonated and somewhat dry in the finish. There is a decent stickiness to this beer that is to be expected in a DIPA. Overall, very good.

Edit: I drank my second can a day later and it was definitely better. The can that I originally reviewed was not quite down to fridge temp and it had a few rough edges. Scores were updated.

12oz can served in a tulip. Canned 05/17/18.

Pours hazy amber with a big head and moderate carbonation. Smell is citra and resin.

Taste is fruity and bittersweet. Boozy.

Mouthfeel is thick -- maybe even luscious. Overall, very nice beer.

I tried this at the brewery. It poured a clear golden with white head that left a nice lace. The scent had citrus peel notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with citrus presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it was a excellent beer.

Pours a golden sttaw with a thin, creamy, white head. Lots of lacing.
Great, candied citrus smell with melon, pineapple, citrus.
Taste follows nose with awesome malt balance. Slight spice, not overly dank.
This is an incredibly smooth character. One of the best beers i have had in a while!

One of my frequent complaints about citra hopped AIPAs is that they could be sweeter (and thus have more alcohol). This one put that experiment to the test.

It pours a dirty golden with fine bubbles. The aroma is clean, for the most part, with a little funky hops undertone. The taste is very big - thick and sweet under a big bitter, with a very boozy, hoppy bitter aftertaste. It's almost too much.

So the experiment I wanted someone to try, yields a huge bomb of a brew. I swear I'm feeling dizzy off a few sips.

In high celebration of the sexiest hop on the planet, the brewers at MadTree slather a strong and hoppy beer with the perfume, taste and bitterness of the Citra hops for a recipe that's sure to exude excellence.

Citra High pours a deep amber haze that's topped with a creamy off white froth. The promised scent of citronella brings tangerine, grapefruit and tropical scents to the forefront with a quick follow of herb, hemp and grass. Honey, caramel and cashew align for the malty sweet taste of graham cracker.

And then the hops explode on the middle palate as the sweetness starts to lift and the radiant character of Citra hops deliver a wallop of mandarin orange, clementine, red grapefruit, mango and passionfruit to the tastebuds. Fresh spruce, grass clippings and a collection of botanical herbs round the finish with lemon verbena, cannabis and sassafras fragrant spices in tow.

Medium bodied and trending dry and bitter as the taste moves along, the finish is crisp, clean and refreshing despite the beer's impressive strength. A long and bitter aftertaste is spicy, grassy and pleasantly dank for a session that suggests a high rate of drinkability and deceptively smooth.

Off white head. Deep honey in color. Nose is a piney resinous hoppy goodness. The taste hides the high Abv. Be very careful as this raft drinking ipa will lay you out quick.

Huge beer that’s somehow easy on the palate and smooth throughout. Growler filled over the weekend and enjoyed on Wednesday.

Copper hue with a puffy head that subsided but never completely disappeared.

Zesty, spicy hops followed by an intense citrus and pine combo. Thick aroma with a loft of heft.

Taste is pith, earthy, spicy, grapefruit and orange zest. Citrusy and bitter but not pungent or fruit forward. Slightly sweet malt speaks to the weight of the beer - for all the hops slugging it out with your palate there is a sturdy malt backbone.

Thick and chewy but real easy drinking; finishes dry and crisp with a resinous coating.

Canned on 11/9/17. 12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy deep golden with a fluffy white head that falls leaving great retention and sticky lacing. The aromas have some sweet sticky fruit along with some mild hints of caramel. Sweet malts are there. Hints of grapefruit and orange. The flavors have a nice amount of citrus. More grapefruit and orange. Malts do their thing. Solid bitterness. Subtle alcohol warmth in the finish, but it's not hot or boozy at all. Mouthfeel is full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's smooth and dangerously drinkable.

This is a solid DIPA. Maybe I was personally expecting the citra hops to come off as more intense due to this being a highly regarded example of the style, but it's still a nice use of hops. Nice citrus flavors. It's nothing too crazy, but it's still enjoyable and fun to drink. Not bad at all.

I am sorry. I couldn’t find anything wrong. Fresh, raw, bitter. This is a Heady Topper clone. I find Heady to be a tad more herbal and a little heavier on grapefruit but this is extremely enjoyable. So drinkable. It just disappears at 9.5% and 120ibu. Fantastic.

Appearance: Arrives hazy with a deep amber almost burnt orange color; the head fades to a film but leaves plenty of sticky lacing

Smell: Pineapple and grapefruit, with a discernible impact from the alcohol in the aroma

Taste: Pineapple and grapefruit forward with citrusy bitterness building; assertively bitter, after the swallow, with some boozy biscuit elements in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet

Overall: A little boozier than I like but all crafted in a west coast way

my absolute favorite DIPA ... cans are good, growler fills from the local store better, fills from the brewery are best.

Beautiful honey orange with a thick white head that last forever and laces great. Smell is boozy, dank and tropical hop. Taste is citrus, tropical, juicy and dank. Velvet smooth, coating, alcohol heat definitely there and slightly dry. This was as good as you can get for me on a high abv IPA. I'm not a fan of the booze with hops but this is as well done as you can get for me.

Hands down the best IPA I've had this summer. A whopper of hoppy, citrus flavor. Beautiful color. Perfect foam and body. It's tropical. It's citrus. It's hoppy. It's juicy. It's fresh (at least mine was). Slight notes of alcohol are present, but at 10.20 percent I believe they are quite well hidden. I would've guessed it was in the 7 percent range. A wonderful presentation of the citra hop.

This is a huge citrusy and hoppy DIPA that has a strong malt backbone to handle all of the citra. A big body that coats the palate. I definitely prefer this over the Galaxy High although both are very good beers. I can't wait to try more Mad Tree brews

Another killer in the MadTree "high" series. Right up there with Galaxy and Mosaic. I would put this beer up against any other IPA out there. Rich color, thick foam full of citrus smell. Great job

Another juicy hop bomb from MadTree.

A - Opaque. Not orange juice cloudy, but a pleasantly myopic, dark, golden hue.

S - Huge, sweet, juicy aroma.

T - Taste follows the aroma more or less. The excellent hop notes sit astride a somewhat disappointing, cloying malt backbone.

M - Mouthfeel is the only place where this beer falters in my opinion. The sweetness of the malt leaves something of an unpleasant, cloying aftertaste that somehow manages to overwhelm the bitterness of the beer's hoppy finish.

O - Excellent DIPA. I look forward to seeing this series continued and refined.

Beer has a lot of citra on the nose. The citra practically overwhelms the Simcoe but I have no issue with that. The malt bill works extremely well with this beer giving it a sweet finish to go along with a subdued bitterness. I couldn't taste the alcohol in this making it scary drinkable.

Re-review. The first time I had it the beer was fairly old. 6/1/16 stamped can this time

It is a cloudy/foggy gold with a white foamy head. Decent lacing. Great retention.

Surprise, lots of citrus. Smells stongly of ripe tropical fruit, but there I would say it is actually malt forward. Very grainy. It smells like a mash tun before hopping.

Tastes much the same. Passion fruit, musty melon, red grapefruit, and mandarin orange up front. Definitely spicey and popping. Some subtle bittering. I really like the malt base, which seems to take over to an exten. The alcohol is fairly noticeable. Not as boozy as Galaxy high though. I guess at almost 11% that is expected.

Nice body. A tad sticky. Still easy drinking for a big beer though. This is where it is better than Galaxy.

Excellent beer. I still think I like Galaxy High more, but this one seems to go down easier.

Great Imperial IPA. Lighter in color. Nice head that dissolves quickly. Sweeter taste than its counterpart in Galaxy High. Smells of citrus. Doesn't feel that it is a 10.2% beer.

Sampled at GABF 2015

Golden Cooper pour, nice aroma and great citra hop flavor. I love the well blended malty backbone that complements the Citra hops citrusy/piney finish. Also very drinkable for an 10.2%-er!

12 FL. OZ. can
Served in a tulip glass

This beer pours amber with golden highlights. It is topped with several inches of sticky, off-white head.

I get different smells from the can and the glass. The can gives of aromas of tropical fruity goodness. The glass smell more dank and serious.

There is a lot of tropical and citrus fruit with a resinous finish.

Medium mouthfeel

This is a beer that I loved on tap and really liked canned. Of course, this is not a fresh can, so take that for what it's worth. Regardless, it is a great IPA.

I usually enjoy Citra hopped beers and I think Madtree's Galaxy High is one of the best local brews in Cincinnati, but I thought Citra High was very underwhelming. I mean, come on, it's Citra. It's a fool-proof hop made to cheat your way to a successful brew, which makes me a little more critical than usual. Essentially, it's too boozy. Or maybe it's not even too boozy, maybe it's just the alcohol doesn't hide well, or nearly as well as Galaxy High. The booze unleashes too much heat and makes it not as refreshing as I had hoped for. I looked for popping tropical and citrus flavors that tend to be the star in most Citra hopped beers, and I'll admit they're present, but they're not distinguished. Frankly, I just don't think it's a good representation of the hop and Madtree. Elaine Benes said it best: "Oh, it's a lot of just fancy-shmancy stuff. You know what it's like? It's like a big budget movie with a story that goes nowhere."

The hops strike from the minute the can is cracked. Citra High is citrusy on the tongue and nose with under-lying resin and caramel. Alcohol brings itself to the forefront as the beer warms up.

12 oz. can into a snifter. Pours a cloudy orange with about 1.5 fingers of slightly off-white foam. Smells quite dank (marijuana-esque), with notes of citrus, grapefruit, and pineapple. Medium weight, and nice and creamy. Bubblegum, grapefruit, mango, and lime up front. Malt creeps in middleways. Also notes of citrus and alcohol. Finishes a little hot with residual bubblegum and grapefruit on the aftertaste. A bit of hoppy bitterness, but not profound.

Overall, decent, but maybe just not up my alley. Definitely the best offering I've had from Madtree, but the flavor just seemed a little off. I'd like to see this one a little less sweet, and a little more blalanced. Still worth trying, though.
