There's never a more summery taste than sour ale and fresh fruit. The mad brewers at MadTree have no problem shamelessly slathering their berlinerweiss styled sour wheat ale with bushels of blueberries for a robust fruit taste on a dry and acidic beer.
Burgundy, blue, purple and mauve, the dark rouge beer brings a colorful haze with a effervescent bubbliness. Its scent is juicy with berry aromatics but also winey with a piquant acidic scent. Hints of cider, citrus and spice tingle the nose in anticipation of the first succulent sip of sourdough, taffy and cobbler.
As the fruit juices wash the middle palate, the strong taste of blueberry comes with an undercurrent of crabapple, lime, gooseberry, red grape, lemon and passionfruit. Growing sourness teases the palate with dry red wine and an off-vinegar taste. A dry late palate shines light on the tannins and pectins of fruit for balance and spice.
Light, dry and refreshing, the ale lacks the premiere acidity and dryness of classic berlinerweiss, but uses its juicier taste and texture to help bring the fruit into juicy, pulpy, succulent session instead. A short aftertaste of burlap and dry wood stops just shy of the linger of fruit that extends into a medium length afterglow.
